MILESTONE 1740. "E R 20 miles Boston 1740" so reads
the milestone. Erected by Deacon Ezekiel Robbins near his
"Brass Ball Tavern" on West Street, beyond the bridge,
near where the Kendall mills now stand. It is on the lawn of the
Town Hall. The Tavern has long since been gone. George Washington
is said to have stopped here in 1756. Deacon Robbins gave the
town its first schoolhouse, and Town Pound.
